Cloud CAD is a software-as-a-service solution in which the data provision and the computing power required to display and calculate the 3D models are moved to the cloud. This results in several advantages for companies.
On the one hand, companies no longer have to purchase powerful computers, which can be a great financial relief given the currently high prices for graphics cards. On the other hand, collaboration within the company can be significantly influenced. Since it is a web solution, different end devices can access 3D models, drawings, etc.. This means that even the mechanic in the workshop or the construction worker on the building site can access the required assembly information as quickly as possible. Some suppliers have also developed special solutions for mobile access from smartphones (see software examples).
The Corona pandemic has also shown that many companies can manage well with a partial or complete home office solution without productivity suffering. However, those who have not previously used cloud-based CAD software may be at a disadvantage. Cloud CAD solutions allow users to work on CAD data from any location.
Some companies are still sceptical about using cloud solutions and prefer a private cloud. However, many company-owned IT systems are not as resistant to hacker attacks as established cloud providers. This should be taken into account when considering whether to choose a SaaS solution.
