Rapid tooling

Rapid tooling

Rapid tooling

The term rapid tooling is a subcategory of additive manufacturing. This involves the construction of specific tools, parts or structures that are required for the production of workpieces. The use of layering techniques in toolmaking saves time and material, which is a major advantage over conventional toolmaking.

Another advantage of using additive manufacturing technologies in tool production is the possibility of inserting channels within the tool. This allows the tool to be cooled or heated in order to achieve better manufacturing properties.

Prerequisites for use

Know-how in the application

A certain amount of know-how is necessary for the use of additive manufacturing processes. This includes the areas of design, material selection and manufacturing.

Make-or-buy decision

Numerous suppliers offer their services in the field of rapid tooling. These have the relevant expertise and the necessary machines. Therefore, the purchase of rapid tooling tools or the in-house production of them has to be weighed up.
