Machine data collection (MDC) describes the interface between production technology machines and information processing. The data from the MDE can flow directly as parameters into the machine control and can also be used as a data source of the shop floor data collection for further purposes, e.g. for statistical process control (SPC) and for planning and controlling production orders.
Machine data is basically all information accumulating at an industrial machine. There are two basic types: process data and product data. Process data includes the information necessary for the operation of the machine and directly generated by the operation. Product data is measured at the processing units and provides valuable information about the production process in connection with the operation of a plant. With regard to the quality of a production, data such as number of pieces, weight, thickness or temperature are essential.
Networking
In order to operate automated machine data collection, the basic prerequisite is continuous networking (IP-based networking). Machines and sensors must be equipped with network components that allow connection to the network.
