Drones

A drone is essentially a flying robot. More precisely, it is an unmanned aircraft. Drones are not only used by the military, they are also used in the private or commercial sector. Consumers are buying drones with cameras, delivery companies are figuring out how to use drones to deliver the next bag of groceries, and farmers are using them to help with crop management. Drones can also be used in industry to support logistics processes, for example.

Requirements for use

Legal requirements

Legislation at European Union level has been in place since 11 September 2018.

  • Mandatory marking: All model aircraft and unmanned aerial systems with a take-off mass of more than 0.25 kilograms must be marked in order to quickly identify the owner in the event of damage. The marking is done by means of a sticker with the name and address of the owner.
  • Proof of knowledge: Proof of knowledge is required for the operation of model aircraft and unmanned aerial systems weighing 2 kilograms or more.
  • Permit required: A permit is required for the operation of model aircraft and unmanned aerial systems weighing more than 5 kilograms and for operation at night.
  • From 100 metres: At this height, drones may only fly if an exemption permit has been obtained from the authorities.
