Polymer (-based) composites

Polymer composites consist of a polymer-based matrix with further fillers or additives, including those on a sustainable basis. By means of compounding, fillers and additives, among other things, are mixed with the actual plastic in order to achieve the desired property profiles.

This is mainly done in extruders. The task of an extruder is to draw in the plastic mass fed into it, compress it, plasticise and homogenise it with the addition of energy, and feed it under pressure to a moulding tool. Subsequently, the polymer-based composite material is granulated and fed to further processes, such as injection moulding. Polymer composites are used, for example, in lightweight construction.
