Plastic extrusion

Plastic extrusion

In extrusion, thermoplastics (e.g. PVC, PE, ABS, PET, PP) and biomaterials (e.g. cellulose acetate, polylactic acid, polyhydroxybutyric acid and wood-plastic composites) are pressed out of a shaping opening under pressure after plasticisation. The resulting extrudate can be produced in any length. Depending on the process engineering task, it may also be necessary to cool the plasticised plastic and pump out gases. The shape of the screw extruder is determined by the type of plastic. Plastic extrusion is mainly used for pipe, profile and film extrusion.

Requirements for use

Production lines

  • Different machines are needed for the different types of plastic extrusion: Heating baths, screw barrels, cooling fans or cooling channels if necessary, pumps, extruder screw, shaping elements such as nozzles or calibre walls, cooling section.
