Living in Münster

Münster's core city with the inner city ring, the old town and the city areas Mitte-Süd and Mitte-Nordost measures only about 24 square kilometres. It is therefore a very small city in terms of area, but one that is all the busier for it. In recent years it has grown strongly, especially outside the inner city ring, and is thus merging more and more with the surrounding districts and Münsterland.

However, living here is as expensive as in Cologne, for example. More information can be found on the website of the city and the Münster Economic Development Agency. In order to meet the increasing demand for housing, the city has built large new housing estates in some districts, for example in the north-eastern Rumphorst (Mitte district) and in the south-western Mecklenbeck (West district). Neighbouring towns and municipalities not far from Münster offer even more affordable housing - Altenberge, Havixbeck, Senden or Telgte, for example, are popular. Some people even commute from Münster to the Ruhr area, which can be reached relatively quickly by train.

Münster - city districts and residential areas

Münster is officially divided into six city districts with a total of 45 neighbourhoods. Most of the more popular residential areas belong to the Mitte district and are therefore perceived by Münster residents as separate city areas. In the following, we will introduce you to these districts, arranged by point of the compass, and explain where the other, somewhat outlying districts of the city join them.

Another tip for those looking for a flat in the city centre: in flat advertisements it is often not Kreuzviertel but "X-Viertel"; the Kuhviertel is often abbreviated to "Q-Viertel".
