Cycling as a way of life: Münsterland voted third most popular destination for cycle tourists

Münsterland is cycling country. According to a recent survey by the Allgemeiner Deutscher Fahrrad-Club e.V. (ADFC). (ADFC), the majority of cycle tourists see it that way. Today the association published the results of its cycle tour analysis. Münsterland is the third most popular cycling region in Germany, just behind Allgäu and Emsland.

"In Münsterland we offer ideal conditions for cycle tourists," confirms Michael Kösters, general representative and tourism expert at Münsterland e.V. "And this includes not only our 4500 kilometres of cycle paths, but also beautiful places and opportunities for a picnic. Because anyone who goes on a bike tour is also happy to take a relaxing break and enjoy a special break amidst the picturesque landscapes with regional products."

The ADFC Travelbike Cycling Trip Analysis is a representative online survey of more than 8000 German citizens. The survey took place for the 21st time in 2019/2020.

The development in Münsterland follows a nationwide trend: "Cycling tourism has been growing for years," says Kösters. "Domestic holidays are becoming increasingly popular. Accordingly, Münsterland as a region is also benefiting from people's increasing desire to pedal. And since, according to studies, holidaymakers in Münsterland also come for the nature and landscape, a cycling holiday is the perfect combination of activity and relaxation." Kösters also sees the ranking in the cycling travel analysis as an opportunity and a mission: "Whoever is number three can also become number one."

One step in this direction, he says, is the upgrading of the 100 Castles Route as part of the comprehensive promotional project "Castles and Palaces Region Münsterland". Through targeted infrastructure and marketing measures, the route is to be qualitatively strengthened and marketed more intensively in the coming years. The project has a total volume of 10 million euros.
