Münsterland e.V. and Münster-Osnabrück Airport share bee sponsorship

Joint contribution to more biodiversity

Around 50,000 hard-working female bees moved into Münster-Osnabrück Airport (FMO) on this year's World Bee Day: more precisely, into the beehive on a lawn directly in front of the terminal building. This is because Münsterland e.V. and FMO are taking on a bee sponsorship together with immediate effect. In this way, FMO and the regional management organisation, whose offices are located at the airport, are not only strengthening their cooperation, but also contributing to more biodiversity in the region with the bees. "We want to set a good example in Münsterland and are pleased that the bees of beekeeper Martin Lückemeier have found a new home at FMO," said Ute Schmidt-Vöcks from Münsterland e.V.'s Business Division.

"When it comes to the topic of sustainability, Münsterland faces major challenges just like many other regions. We as Münsterland e.V. have therefore set out with the help of our sustainability strategy to make our contribution to more climate and species protection. The bee colony is one of many building blocks within our strategy," explains Schmidt-Vöcks. Frauke Brundiek, Environmental Officer at Münster-Osnabrück Airport, adds: "The bee sponsorship project, which we are implementing together with Münsterland e.V. and the bee sponsor here at FMO, is an important contribution to preserving biodiversity. With this, we want to show our guests and visitors that you can also take responsibility for the environment with small measures. I hope that we can sensitise many people to the preservation of biodiversity with our bee colony."

Beekeeper Martin Lückemeier is looking forward to working together and looking after the bees on site: "I am a passionate beekeeper and would like to offer companies the chance to actively participate in the preservation of biodiversity in our region. Bees are fascinating animals and are considered one of the most important farm animals. They pollinate our trees, flowers and crops within two to three kilometres and in the process they produce delicious honey." Visitors will find the beehive, which houses around 50,000 bees, in the green area between the short-term parking spaces at the terminal building.
