Münsterland is climate land! Region launches joint climate campaign

57 municipalities, all four Münsterland districts, the City of Münster, the EnergyAgency.NRW and Münsterland e.V. are taking part

MUNSTERLAND. Together for more climate protection: The regional climate campaign "Münsterland is Climate Land" was launched today (22 April) with two digital kick-off events. Almost the entire Münsterland is involved: 58 municipalities, including the City of Münster, and the four Münsterland districts have joined forces to animate citizens to take action for the climate. The campaign is based on a concept developed by the EnergyAgency.NRW on behalf of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia and coordinated jointly with Münsterland e.V..

First of all, the mayors of the participating municipalities, the district councillors of the districts of Borken, Coesfeld, Steinfurt and Warendorf as well as the Lord Mayor of the City of Münster committed themselves to the campaign in a joint video conference. District President Dorothee Feller, as patron, emphasised the importance of municipal climate protection: "This Münsterland-wide commitment to climate protection is an important signal. The goal agreed in the Paris Agreement to keep global warming below two degrees must be implemented at both the international and local level; we can all make a contribution. We want to focus on this commitment with the regional climate campaign and also make others want to protect the climate." NRW Economics Minister Andreas Pinkwart also paid tribute to the regional commitment in Münsterland in a video message.

The campaign communicates information on the topics of renewable energies, building renovation, user behaviour, mobility and climate impact adaptation and presents useful tips and information on www.muensterland.com/klimaland. Media packages, templates, advertising and information materials are available to all actors for on-site implementation and can be individually adapted. For example, municipalities have the opportunity to call on their citizens to participate in events, local actions and to get involved in their hometown via social media, press releases, posters and flyers. In addition, recommendations for action and knowledge on the topic of climate protection are conveyed.

Klaus Ehling, board member of the regional management organisation Münsterland e.V., sees great added value for the region in the campaign: "Being close to nature is part of the DNA of the people in Münsterland. The high quality of life in our region is one of our great strengths, which we must preserve. With the campaign, we want to encourage even more locals to live sustainably and get involved in climate protection at home or with the local community."

The concept of the climate campaign was developed by the EnergyAgency.NRW, which works on behalf of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia. Managing Director Lothar Schneider emphasises: "The Münsterland proves once again how active the region is in climate protection. We are very pleased to have been able to support here." The campaign is being implemented in the region by the Klima.Netzwerker of the EnergyAgency.NRW and Münsterland e.V., in close cooperation with the Münsterland districts and the City of Münster.

Citizens then had a first look at the design and the faces of the campaign this evening at the digital event "Think globally, act locally - because: Münsterland is climate land". In a round table discussion, committed Münsterlanders presented how they live in a climate-friendly way thanks to cargo bikes, chickens in the garden and water and electricity saving models, for example, and gave tips on how to save energy or reduce emissions.

Afterwards, climate researcher Professor Mojib Latif impressed the audience with a lecture on the causes and consequences of global climate change. "Germany has a two percent share of global greenhouse emissions, but only one percent of the world's population. Every citizen is therefore called upon to help protect the climate," said Latif. The climate researcher is President of the German branch of the well-known Club of Rome, an international association of experts that has been working for a sustainable future since 1972. His last book was a Spiegel bestseller and is entitled "Heißzeit. At full throttle into the climate catastrophe - and how we step on the brakes".

Further events for Münsterlanders are planned in the course of the year.
