"Such a high donation amount despite Corona - we are thrilled," said tour leader Joachim Wechner last Sunday when announcing the donation amount of the RennFietsen Tour Münsterland 2021. 30 male and female racing cyclists were on the road in the region from 13 to 16 May and "made kilometres" for a good cause. With each kilometre ridden, donations were collected for the two aid organisations Stiftung AGAPEDIA and roterkeil.net, totalling 25,000 euros.
After the RennFietsen Tour had to be cancelled without replacement last year, the organisation team came up with a new concept for this year with day tours without overnight stays. The participants rode individual routes - in corona-compliant small groups or on their own. Every morning they were prepared for the day in a virtual warm-up, for example by Fabian Wegemann, former professional cyclist and guardian angel of the red wedge, or Alexander Meyer, professional footballer of SSV Jahn Regensburg and supporter of the Agapedia Foundation. Jürgen Klinsmann, founder of the Agapedia Foundation, also sent a video message from California. On Sunday evening, everyone met for a digital final round.
Joachim Wechner: "Unusual times require unusual measures. We all agreed that the tour must not be cancelled again. The thought of children in need is motivation enough, because especially during the pandemic we want and need to support children in particular. With a total donation of 25,000 euros, we more than succeeded."
The participants pedalled hard and even endured the odd rain or hail shower. "2021 was a very special tour," says Holger Lordieck from Raesfeld, who was on his bike for the good cause on all four days. "Team spirit and cohesion could be felt even over the distance and the final meeting on Sunday evening was very emotional. Nevertheless, I'm looking forward to seeing everyone live again in 2022 and spending the four days together in Münsterland."
Münsterland e.V. was also able to contribute a part in addition to the organisation: it donated new jerseys in Münsterland colours for the participants, and the proceeds went towards the donation total. "We are happy that the tour could take place at all and are glad that we could support the tour both financially and visually with the jerseys," said Kerstin Clev from the organising team at Münsterland e.V.
Many beautiful impressions of the tour days can still be seen on the Facebook channel @Rennfietsentour.
