Active holiday | Hiking on the Hermannsweg

Let your gaze wander over expansive landscapes and enjoy marvellous views. Overcome distances and let the landscape take effect on you. Sharpen your senses and listen to what nature has to say - welcome to the Hermannsweg!

Its name is derived from Hermann the Cheruscan, who defeated the Roman general Varus and defeated three Roman legions. The Hermann Monument commemorates the event. The 156-kilometre hiking trail is considered one of the most beautiful mountain trails in Germany and runs along the ridge of the Teutoburg Forest. Starting in Rheine, it leads over heights of 100 to 400 metres to Horn-Bad Meinberg. The trail leads through two nature parks: "Terra Vita" and "Naturpark Eggegebirge und südlicher Teutoburger Wald". Shortly before its end - in Leopoldstal - you reach the highest point of the tour with the 441 metre-high rock formation of the Lippische Velmerstot. From here you have an unrivalled view of the surrounding area.

Other sights and natural monuments such as the Sparrenburg, the Tönsberg with the Sachsenlager, the Externsteine and the Adlerwarte Berlebeck make this tour a natural and cultural experience.

Itinerary of your active holiday

Day 1: Hike to Hörstel/ Riesenbeck (approx. 23km)

Along the fresh Ems floodplains, old cultivated landscapes initially form the backdrop. The Bevergerner Aa then leads leisurely into the idyllic town centre of Bevergern. Almost at the end of this stage, you will discover the Dortmund-Ems Canal lock system, which is well worth seeing.

Day 2: Hike to Tecklenburg (approx. 15 km)

This hiking stage of the Hermannshöhen begins at the westernmost foothills of the Teutoburg Forest and surprises with bizarre sandstone formations such as the Dörenther Klippen. The half-timbered mountain town of Tecklenburg welcomes you with its lively hustle and bustle around the largest open-air theatre in Germany.

Day 3: Hike to Bad Iburg (approx. 23 km)

The route leads along huge limestone quarries to Iburg Castle on the largely unspoilt ridge path. The route is free of steep ascents and descents. In many places, there are impressive views over the quarries into the Münsterland parkland.

Day 4: Hike to Bad Rothenfelde (approx. 16 km)

The hike continues eastwards. Evenly spread over the stage, the route climbs quite steeply three times. The first beautiful rest and viewing point is reached after a short hike past the Freedenhütte waypoint.

Day 5: Hike to Halle (approx. 18 km)

Wooded paths and some very beautiful viewpoints line the route from Bad Rothenfelde to Halle Westfalen. A delicious stopover is the gingerbread town of Borgholzhausen with the Schulze café. Ravensberg Castle is also well worth a visit and invites you to take a break.

Day 6: Hike to Bielefeld (approx. 19 km)

The narrow ridge of the Teutoburg Forest follows in the footsteps of the Counts of Ravensberg. A special highlight: the Olderdissen Wildlife Park directly on the Hermannsweg. After passing theHünenburg castle, you descend the Osning Pass before climbing relatively steeply again to the stage destination, the Sparrenburg castle - which is rewarded with a particularly beautiful panoramic view.

Day 7: Hike to Hörste (approx. 19 km)

The Teutoburg Forest and the Eggegebirge mountains stretch narrow and long. The town of Oerlinghausen has a number of sights to offer, e.g. the Tönskapelle chapel, the ruins of an early medieval chapel, the cairn graves on the Hanegge, the archaeological open-air museum and much more. You spend the night in Lage / Hörste.

Day 8: Hike to Horn - Bad Meinberg (approx. 20 km)

In Horn Bad Meinberg, the trail ends at the 441 metre high rock formation of the Lippische Velmerstot.

Day 9: Return journey

The return journey is organised independently the next day.
