HolidayTour Historic Town Centres

390 km through Westphalia

Do you love discoveries, like to conquer new terrain as a pedal knight, let the gables and alleys tell you stories and listen to stone witnesses from times long past? Then you've come to the right place on the Historic Town Centres Cycle Route: the approximately 390-kilometre tour through Münsterland and South Westphalia opens up a wide variety of perspectives. Sometimes gabled buildings bear witness to the medieval heyday of a town located on important trade routes. At other times, art and cultural-historical treasures hint at the former wealth of a region.

The historic town centres of Warendorf, Rheda-Wiedenbrück, Rietberg, Lippstadt, Soest, Werl, Werne, Steinfurt and Tecklenburg are strung togetherlike pearlson a necklace - "strung" on a green ribbon whose natural radiance lends the cycle route its special charm even beyond the historical facets. Surprises and distinctive experiences characterise the Historic Town Centres cycle route, which leads through a scenic and well-developed area for cycling tourism.

Journey to Warendorf

The "horse capital" Warendorf welcomes you. Take a walk through the beautiful old town with its many historic buildings and half-timbered houses. Quiet alleys alternate with lively squares and give the town its very own charm. Of course, a visit to the state stud farm should not be missed during your tour. The perfect day to get in the mood for your big bike tour.

Warendorf - Rietberg (50 km)

Immediately after checking in your luggage, you set off on the first 50 km stage from Warendorf to Rheda-Wiedenbrück. The small town surprises not only with the magnificent Rheda Castle, but also with two historic town centres. The old town of Rietberg at today's stage destination is extremely picturesque. The route goes through the Ems meadows and along so-called "Pättkes", partly shaded avenues. You will spend the night in Rietberg.

Day 2

Rietberg - Soest (65 km)

The second stage leads from Rietberg in the Emstal valley via Lippstadt in the Lippe valley to Soest, about 65 km. It connects three historic town centres. A tour of the beautiful towns with their magnificent buildings should definitely be planned. Overnight stay in Soest

Soest - Werne (60 km)

From Soest with its many picturesque alleys via Werl, which is well worth seeing, to Werne in the southern Münsterland, the third stage covers 60 km. At the destination Werne, a visit to the numerous restaurants around the historic market is worthwhile. The town's saltwater pool offers hours of relaxation. You will spend the night in Werne.

Werne - Münster (60 km)

The route now leads from Werne to Münster over 60 km. The route takes you through a tranquil agricultural area, the so-called Münsterland park landscape. You pass the Aasee lake and enter Münster. The "Leeze", as the bicycle is called here, is THE means of transport in the city. The old town of Münster around the Prinzipalmarkt and the imposing cathedral is well worth seeing. Overnight stay in Münster.

Day 6

The gatehouse at the moated castle of Steinfurt The gatehouse at the moated castle of Steinfurt

Münster - Steinfurt (50 km)

The fifth stage goes from Münster to Steinfurt and is about 50 km long. So in the morning there is still time for a sightseeing tour in Münster. The Lambertikirche, the Erbdrostenhof and Münster Castle are extremely worthwhile destinations. In places, the cycle path leads along the Dortmund-Ems Canal and out into the Ems meadows near Greven and on to Steinfurt or Burgsteinfurt with its historic town centre and famous moated castle. The gatehouse is one of the most popular photo motifs in the region. We spend the night in Steinfurt.

Day 7

The picturesque old town of Tecklenburg The picturesque old town of Tecklenburg

Steinfurt - Tecklenburg (60 km)

From Steinfurt to Tecklenburg, the route goes up into the Teutoburg Forest. So here today there are around 360 metres of altitude to climb over around 60 km. But you will be rewarded with fantastic views over the Münsterland in Tecklenburg's historic old town! The townscape of Tecklenburg around the market square is unique in Münsterland. You will spend the night in Tecklenburg.

Day 8
