Peace Route by bike

On the trail of the Westphalian peace

Cycling in the footsteps of German history: the 163 km long Peace Route connects the historic town halls of the two cities of peace, Münster and Osnabrück. You can expect a scenically and culturally varied long-distance cycle route along the former bridle paths of the so-called peace riders.

Background: For five years, peace and the end of the Thirty Years' War in Germany were fought over in the two cities. Messages between the two places of negotiation were exchanged by peace riders. At that time, these riders had to rely on their local knowledge; you, on the other hand, can rely on the signposting on the Peace Route. Discover the architectural witnesses, ride along fields and meadows and past the Teutoburg Forest.

Journey to Münster

Take plenty of time to get to know the beautiful city. There are many places worth seeing, including Münster Castle and the Botanical Garden, the Erbdrostenhof and the Prinzipalmarkt. On your tour of Münster, you should definitely stop by the Peace Hall in the Historic Town Hall. European history was made here in 1648 with the Peace of Westphalia and the first university in Westphalia was founded here in 1773. Münster's gastronomy offers something for every taste, from Westphalian specialities in the Kuhviertel to trendy eateries on the Kreativkai and restaurants with an Alster ambience on the Aaseeterrassen. For the night, there is a hotel centrally located in Münster.

Münster - Ladbergen (approx. 39 km)

Your cycle tour will start at the Friedenssaal in Münster and head towards Greven - always along the Ems and past idyllic meadows and parks. You will encounter an absolute highlight right on the outskirts of the city: the Rieselfelder, a nature reserve with some rare bird species. Finally, you arrive in the small, picturesque district of Gimbte. It attracts visitors with many charming cafés, restaurants and its charming surroundings. Continue through Greven to your destination for the day: Ladbergen. Here you will stay at the Hotel An de Miälkwellen or at Stegemann.

Day 3

Ladbergen - Osnabrück (approx. 44 km)

Ladbergen is a place steeped in history - after all, it can look back on more than 1050 years of history. The peace riders who took up quarters here between Münster and Osnabrück in 1648 already appreciated the special hospitality. On the way to Osnabrück you can explore the town of Lengerich. As Lengerich was strategically located on the road between the two peace towns and had suffered little damage during the war, the hamlet was suitable and distinguished enough to host an elite company. Following in the footsteps of the peace rider, the route takes you via Ledde and Hasbergen to Osnabrück. Here you will spend the night in a centrally located hotel.

Day 4

Osnabrück - Bad Laer (approx. 35 km)

This morning, enjoy the city of Osnabrück, the "Site of the Peace of Westphalia". The centre of the city is the beautiful market square with the historic town hall, which houses the Peace Hall (as in Münster). Then it's off by bike to Bad Laer. Bad Laer is known for its healing natural brine, the variety of health offers and original events. Stroll through the cosy town centre, which is characterised by picturesque half-timbered houses. You will spend the night at Hotel Große Kettler or Mönter Meyer.

Bad Laer - Münster (approx. 50 km)

On the last stage, back to Münster, you will experience the beautiful, flat park landscape of the Münsterland. More historical sites and Loburg Castle await you via Bad Glandorf to Ostbevern. Afterwards, the tour continues through the historic town of Telgte. Small alleys and sculptures lend it something magical. The jewel of the town is the pilgrimage chapel with the image of the "Sorrowful Mother". Your journey finally ends in Münster.
