Romans, cyclists, sand and lakes - Haltern am See with its historical roots lies in the heart of the Hohe Mark Nature Park. The town is characterised by its wonderful location between forest and lakes - it is not for nothing that Haltern am See is one of the most popular holiday resorts in Münsterland.
The beautiful old town, the unique lake landscape, heathland and moorland, rivers, canals, streams and picturesque districts - Haltern am See offers culture, nature and recreation for young and old. Even at weekends, visitors can still find secluded spots at the Hullern reservoir or in the Westrup Heath. By the way, the heath shows its most beautiful side in autumn.
And you can discover them in your own way, for example by bike on one of the six cycle paths of the over 280 km long network of circular routes. Or on the 100 castles route or the Römer-Lippe route, which also leads to the LWL Roman Museum , where old and new finds from the Roman camps along the Lippe are presented. But the area can also be explored on foot or on horseback thanks to beautiful paths, special Nordic walking trails and well-marked networks of bridle paths.
End the day with an evening stroll through the pretty old town and take advantage of the numerous street cafés, traditional inns or quaint pubs to stop off for a bite to eat. The town is particularly attractive around the market square with the historic town hall.
