Barrier-free in Münster

A short holiday for all

Accessible travel in Münster and the surrounding area

The town of Vreden is the only place in Münsterland to have been awarded the "Travel for All" labelling system. But Münster is also following suit. More and more hotels and sights in the university city bear the quality mark. Thanks to strict selection criteria, this makes pleasant holidays possible for everyone.

On this page you will find travel inspiration that will show you what a three-day trip to the beautiful cycling city of Münster and its surroundings could look like!

Arriving in Münster

In Münster, the Alexian Hotel am Wasserturm is as colourful and diverse as life in the city itself. The inclusive hotel is certified according to "Travel for All" and is located between Münster-Hiltrup and Senden, nestled in the flat Münsterland park landscape. All public areas in the hotel are barrier-free accessible, and great importance is also attached to the needs of guests with hearing disabilities. There are also wheelchair-accessible rooms with extra space. In the evening, you can enjoy delicious dishes from the region in the hotel restaurant.

Sightseeing and culinary delights

The next morning, baked goods from the hotel's own bakery await you at breakfast. Well-fuelled, you can take the bus to Münster and discover the historic history of the university city on a tour of the town. If you prefer to explore the city by bus, the barrier-free Münsterbus might be something for you. You are completely flexible and can hop on and off as often as you like at twelve stops (Hop-On Hop-Off). Convenient and easy!

A city tour can make you pretty hungry. So head to the "1648" restaurant! It is named after the year of the Peace of Westphalia and aims to continue the idea of peace today. The restaurant - also an inclusive establishment - is located on the 11th and 12th floors of Stadthaus 1 and offers a magnificent view over Münster. It is accessible via a lift.

Afterwards, you'll be ready for a stroll through the city. A visit to the arcades is a must! Let yourself be enchanted by the historic architecture in the centre of Münster. Afterwards, the Erbdrostenhof and Münster Palace await you along with the Botanical Gardens. Please note: you can only visit the Erbdrostenhof and Münster Palace from the outside.

Tip: We recommend using the barrier-free city map "Barrierefrei durch Münster", which contains lots of information on accessibility.

The Erbdrostenhof is rightly one of the city's most popular photo motifs. Built according to the plans of Baroque master builder Johann Conrad Schlaun, the magnificent building, together with the Dominican Church and the Clemens Church, forms the "Baroque island" in Münster's centre.

Then we go to the castle, which was also penned by Schlaun and is now the seat of the administration of Münster University. Especially in summer, the Schlossplatz in front of the building is a popular venue for various events. But you shouldn't miss the back of the castle either. Behind it is the Botanical Garden. It belongs to the university and is an important place for scientific research and teaching of botany, but with its beautiful flora it is also an ideal place for a walk.

Afterwards, you can enjoy a coffee in the palace garden. There is a step at the main entrance that can be overcome with a mobile ramp. For dinner, for example, we recommend the "LUX Barkultur & Grillkunst". The restaurant is located in the heart of Münster in the building of the LWL Museum of Art and Culture. It is barrier-free accessible.

The city of water castles

On your last day of travel, you will go to Lüdinghausen, the city of water castles. With Burg Vischering and Burg Lüdinghausen, there are two of them in the town centre! You will visit one of them, but first you will take a short, barrier-free tour of the town. You will also cross the so-called "StadtLandschaft", a park between the two castles.

For lunch, you can enjoy a bite to eat in the restaurant "Flussaufwärts", which is located in the Steverbett Hotel. Access is barrier-free. Once you've had enough to eat, the next highlight awaits you: Vischering Castle. It is one of the most important and beautiful moated castles in Germany and is certified by "Travel for All". The main castle is home to a permanent multimedia exhibition on the history of the castle. Changing exhibitions by contemporary artists can be seen in the outer castle. But the castle is also absolutely worth seeing from the outside. You can enjoy this view with a coffee in the Café Reitstall. A great end to your trip.
