Sassenberg

Formerly the residence town of the prince-bishops of Münster, today an asparagus metropolis and attractive attraction in the countryside. Sassenberg in the eastern Münsterland has become a popular destination for day trips and holidays and offers very good opportunities to visit the surrounding area as well as the cities of Münster and Osnabrück.

Places of interest

The Feldmark recreation area with the Feldmarksee, a recognised EU bathing water with lido, is widely known. Sailing, surfing, pedal boating and fishing are also popular leisure activities here. The tables and benches at the lake invite you to have a picnic with a view of the lake.

In the district of Füchtorf is the probably unique double castle complex of Harkotten, which goes back to an old castle complex from the beginning of the 14th century and is now a popular destination for excursions. But there are also some historical buildings worth seeing in the town centre, such as the Old Customs House from 1734 or the Princely Mill from 1578, one of the few historical buildings still preserved in Sassenberg.

Asparagus: Westphalian gold

From a culinary point of view, the district of Sassenberg-Füchtorf is on the hit list of all gourmets, especially in spring. Around 20 asparagus farms give Füchtorf its reputation as an asparagus metropolis. The taste of fresh asparagus is unique and firmly established on the menus of regional cuisine at harvest time. The crowning of the asparagus queen is one of the highlights of the asparagus season in Sassenberg.
