The castle is located in the heart of the city Ahaus, only a few metres from the pedestrian zone. Due to its special architecture, the baroque castle is not only a landmark of the city, but also lends it a very special charm. The baroque complex, which once served as a summer residence for the prince bishops of Münster, impresses among other things with the Triumphal Gate with guardhouse and the gate tower. In the 19th century, the castle housed a tobacco factory, among other things, until it was hit by a bombing raid in 1945 and burnt out completely. The baroque furnishings of the rooms, which had been preserved until then, were lost as a result. The district bought the ruins and had them rebuilt. Today there are still two rooms that have been preserved historically - the Garden Hall and the Prince's Hall. Among other things, wedding ceremonies and concerts take place here. Furthermore, the castle today houses the technical academy and two museums in the gatehouses - the School Museum and the Gatehouse Museum.
Schösser- und Burgentag meets the Münsterland Picnic Days: this year's picnic will once again take place at Ahaus Castle. Under the motto "Together instead of alone - picnics promote communication", you can book a packed picnic bag for two people and enjoy a picnic at the longest picnic table in the castle garden. The booked picnic bags will be handed out on site between 10 am and 12 noon.
Please note: You can also drop by the castle without a purchased picnic bag, but priority seating at the tables will be given to ticket holders. No picnic bag can be purchased on site!
The Ahaus local history association opens the school museum, the old country school and the industrial museum. The gatehouse museum is also open. Guided tours of the castle with "Oldenkott's Natz" are offered.
The Städtische Kapelle Ahaus 1883 e.V. invites you to a coffee concert in the castle courtyard. Enjoy coffee, cake and chilled drinks and look forward to a varied programme, from classical marches to modern entertainment pieces, presented by the Städtische Kapelle Ahaus 1883 e.V. under the direction of Christoph Harpers.
