Torfmoorsee in Hörstel

The 57-hectare Torfmoor recreation area in Hörstel with its lake of the same name has a lot to offer: You can go sailing, fishing or surfing here. The large bathing bay in the southeast is connected to the Torfmoorsee. A wonderful sandy beach and a sunbathing lawn are perfect for sunbathing and relaxing.

In addition, several paths invite you to engage in sporting activities such as cycling, jogging or hiking: In addition to a 2.5 km long circular hiking trail, you will find a bridle path, a forest nature trail and a geological nature trail with 23 rocks including information boards. A forest sports field and a weather shelter with a barbecue area round off the offerings at the lake!

The wetland

In the immediate vicinity of the bathing lake there is also a wetland biotope, which was created in 1980. However, this is not accessible. So please protect nature and do not go swimming in the lake. Of course, you can take a walk and enjoy the view: The lake itself is surrounded by the above-mentioned circular hiking trail, which is linked to the forest and geological nature trail.

Münsterland in detail

It all started with the A30...

The Torfmoorsee owes its existence to the expansion of the nearby Autobahn 30. In the early 1970s, large amounts of soil were needed to fill the motorway embankment - and they were found on the Torfmoor site. Gradually, the sand was excavated for the construction of the motorway, and thus the peat bog lake was created. In 1985, the large bathing bay was built as part of the further expansion of the local recreation area.
