Diepenbrock Castle, also called Diepenbrock House, is a small, charming moated castle near Barlo, a district of Bocholt. The estate takes its name from the Westphalian expression for the impassable marshland that once surrounded it. For "diepen brock" means something like "deep break". Today, this in no way does justice to the beautiful house: a picturesque park with old trees worth seeing invites you to take relaxing walks through the beautiful nature. In the neighbouring café you can make yourself comfortable with coffee and cake and enjoy the view of a lake. On Sundays, the restaurant also offers a delicious brunch.
The Festscheune and the Remise can be rented for various festivities, e.g. a wedding. And those who want to stay here longer can stay in one of the 15 rooms in the neighbouring hotel. However, the castle itself is privately occupied and is not available for tours.
It was named after the noble Diepenbrock family, who received the property as a fief in 1326. From 1520 onwards, numerous structural extensions took place in conjunction with subsequent changes of ownership. The gatehouse, farm buildings and finally the baroque manor house with its own moat from the 18th century bear witness to splendid times. Extensive restorations and renovations by the current owners have revived the splendour of the castle. The interiors, some of which are centuries old, with furniture and architectural elements from the Rococo period, have also been preserved.
On this audio journey, learn more about the Tenhofen family, who have been able to call Diepenbrock House their own since the beginning of 2022. Indulge in childhood memories, ghost stories and myths that surround the castle.
