Haus Klein-Schonebeck in the municipality of Nottuln is a beautiful manor house as it is written in the book. Originally, the building was a classic two-island complex and surrounded on all sides by water and circular ramparts. The farm buildings and the old, well-preserved manor house are situated around the courtyard. The moat has been filled in today, but is still clearly visible in the terrain. Only remnants of the outer castle remain.
The estate is privately owned and cannot be visited. Visual contact is possible from the road leading past the house.
The house Klein-Schonebeck was first mentioned in documents at the end of the 14th century. It is assumed that it emerged from a division of property on the house Groß-Schonebeck. Unlike Groß-Schonebeck, however, Haus Klein-Schonebeck remained in the possession of the Lords of Schonebeck until the middle of the 16th century. After that, it passed through several inheritances to the von Brabeck zu Brabeck family, to the von Aschebrock lords and to the counts of Westerholt, in whose family ownership the estate has now been for more than three hundred years.
The two-storey manor house dates from around 1520 and was built for Heinrich von Schonebeck. It is a rectangular brick building with ashlar integration. The stepped gables with corner turrets on the north and south walls are striking. The octagonal stair tower was added in 1587, the same year in which further alterations were made to the interior of the house. The entrance, which used to be in the middle of the north side, was moved to the place next to the stair tower.
