Once it was the largest and most powerful hilltop castle in northern Germany: Tecklenburg Castle. Today it is one of the most beautiful architectural fragments of past times in our region. High above Tecklenburg, it offers not only interesting insights but also extraordinary views.
Built as a control point for a trade route around 1100, the castle brought in customs duties and profits. Noble courts settled around it. Despite the fact that the site was under a ban in 1226, its popularity did not diminish and it came into the pledge possession of the Bishop of Osnabrück. After numerous feuds, Count Konrad von Tecklenburg-Schwerin had the castle fortified in the 16th century. Later, his daughter Anna converted it into a residential castle, but it was sold to King Frederick of Prussia in 1707. Due to a lack of care and maintenance, the magnificent castle increasingly fell into disrepair, but when it was cleared for use as a quarry in 1744, it became one of the most beautiful ruins in the Münsterland region. Since 1934 it has been home to the internationally renowned Tecklenburg Open Air Theatre.
