The Cement Museum in Beckum provides insights into limestone layers - some of which are around 300 million years old! - and the famous history of the so-called cement district. Visitors learn how the building material was produced and what economic and industrial success it brought to the town. Documents, pictures and films provide extensive information - from (former) production to worldwide delivery. Thanks to many models and manufactured products, the feeling of cold, hard cement and brittle sand-lime brick can be "touched" here. For more than ten years, eight volunteers and former cement workers have put a lot of passion into preserving the city's impressive cement history and invite visitors to discover it.
In no other part of Germany was the cement industry concentrated in such a small area as in the former district of Beckum, today the southern part of the district of Warendorf. Today, large quarries, former extraction sites and extensive factories still characterise the landscape around Beckum and Ennigerloh. There is evidence that the lime and marl deposits in Beckum were already being exploited in the Middle Ages. Until the late 19th century, the material was extracted by hand using hoes, crowbars and shovels and transported to the factory by horse and cart - which meant heavy physical strain for the quarry workers (stone coolers)! It was only later that more powerful mechanical quarrying methods, such as excavators, the use of explosives and quarry railways, were invented or discovered. The "ring kilns" that came onto the market in the middle of the 19th century greatly improved the quality and quantity of lime production.
