The DA, Kunsthaus Kloster Gravenhorst is a former monastery complex from the 13th century that has been extensively renovated and has been presenting contemporary art since 2004. The focus is on community-orientated art projects that are located somewhere between participation and site-specific intervention. Today, you can visit changing exhibitions and take part in workshops or open art projects within the historic monastery walls in Hörstel.
For 555 years, Cistercian nuns lived in Gravenhorst Abbey, with a kitchen garden and all the farm buildings around it. When the convent came to an end in 1811, there were several changes of ownership with different uses, such as a school, a mechanical engineering centre and a mushroom farm, all of which have left their mark. Since 2004, the Kunsthaus has functioned as an exhibition platform for contemporary art, whereby DA stands for Denkmal-Atelier (monument studio) and refers to the communication of historical knowledge and active engagement with contemporary art.
The interactive art installations, concerts and other cultural events transform the DA, Kunsthaus Kloster Gravenhorst into a lively art venue where art can be experienced. In the small hall, a historical presentation alternates every six months with artistic project sketches from the ideas workshop of the KunstKommunikation project grant. The large hall is mainly intended for light and sound art exhibitions such as "Winterlicht" and "SOUNDSEEING", which do not require a large hanging space and emphasise the special aura of the monastery building. Regional events such as the art competition "Jugend gestaltet" and the group exhibition "Kunst in der Region" are also organised here.
The centrepiece of the Kunsthaus is the KunstKommunikation project grant, which has been promoting participatory art projects and interventions in rural areas since 2006. The scholarship holders present their projects on various occasions such as "openArt" or "Marktzauber", where they seek direct dialogue with the public. Their site-specific artworks thrive on active participation, as regional providers such as companies, associations or local residents are often involved in the creation process.

The finissage of the summer exhibition "[intimacy] - Of People and Places" will be accompanied by a special supporting programme that will once again address the themes of the exhibition and also invite visitors to enjoy and exchange ideas at a summer festival. With art activities by Samuel Treindl and Franziska Windisch, an exclusive guided tour by the curators and a concert by Dutch pianist, singer and composer Lis Bad.
For the 7th time, the international woodwind festival Summerwinds Münsterland attracts visitors to attractive venues in the region with a top-class music programme. Baroque meets folk as part of the Gravenhorst concert evening: the ensemble I Zefirelli from Hamburg dedicates itself to pieces by the composer Georg Philipp Telemann (1681 - 1767) and his contemporaries.
Telemann once found pure inspiration in the pubs of Krakow and Pless. He found "thoughts for a lifetime" in the folk music played there and was one of the first to fuse popular music, folklore and serious music. The combination of noblesse and elegance, paired with influences of "barbaric beauty", is what makes the pieces that I Zefirelli has selected from his compositions so charming. Played with the skill and knowledge of today, his pieces sound fresh and new - as do the selected works of his contemporary colleagues and humorous folk songs from the past. Early music of today, with an ensemble that has won prizes in various competitions and the coveted European EEEMERGING+ funding programme.
