A fascinating display of contemporary European glass art awaits you at the Lette Glass Museum in Coesfeld. The foundation stone for the museum was once the private collection of Lilly Ernsting (1930 - 2023). Because she wanted to share her love of glass with others, she founded the museum together with her husband Kurt Ernsting in 1996.
The museum stands on the site of the former Tenth Barn of the Alter Hof Herding, an important part of the history of the district of Lette. Even though the former barn has been replaced by a modern hall made of Ibbenbüren sandstone, part of the historic farmstead is still there: the first vintages of the glass collection are housed in the so-called "Alte Tenne" next to the hall.
The glass museum is run by the Ernsting Foundation Alter Hof Herding, which was founded in 1995 and is also based here.
Tracking down and exhibiting new trends in glass art - these are the museum's central concerns. And it succeeds! The large collection is constantly being expanded through new acquisitions. There are also several exhibitions a year. Exhibitions with invited artists on thematic projects as well as those with students from art academies and universities and pupils from glass schools.
But there is not only a lot to discover inside the museum, glass works are also exhibited outside the building. In the glass garden, you can enjoy the colourful world of flowers and plants as well as art.
If you can't get enough of glass, you should also stop by the Glasdepot. It was opened by the Ernstings in 2006 and is located in the neighbouring Höltingshof.
