This museum sets a special accent in the museum landscape of northern Münsterland: the Tüöttenmuseum in Mettingen. If you want to find out more about the life of the Tüötten (linen merchants) and the history of Mettingen, a visit to the museum is a must.
The museum is located in the rooms of the historic Telsemeyer inn and was opened to the public in 1962. It was set up by members of the Mettingen local history association and descendants of the Tüötten from Mettingen, Recke and Hopsten.
The history of Tüötten goes back more than 400 years: from Mettingen, the travelling merchants brought high-quality linen to the Netherlands and later to northern and eastern Germany as well as the Baltic States and even Scandinavia. The demand was high!
You can still experience the everyday working and living life of the Tüötten and their families today in rooms furnished true to the original in three half-timbered houses arranged in a row: In addition to impressive murals, beautiful drawings, photos and reverse glass paintings, there is also an extensive collection of furniture, everyday objects and old customs on display.
By the way: many a company history began with the Tüötten, for example that of the C&A Group.
Would you like a guided tour through the historic rooms of Haus Telsemeyer? You'll learn even more about the history of the Tüötten! This is followed by a visit to the Tüötten Museum: Where do many old proverbs come from? How is flax made into linen? How difficult was the "big wash" in the past? These and many other questions will be answered during an entertaining guided tour.
