The Wolfgang Borchert Theatre at Münster's harbour is one of the oldest professional private theatres in Germany. It stages around 280 performances of more than 20 plays a year.
The ensemble and repertory theatre builds on a broad repertoire: modern playwrights, socially critical comedies, but also classics such as Brecht or Schiller. A highlight are the large summer theatre open-air events at exposed locations, such as on a water stage in the harbour basin.
With 146 seats, barrier-free access, new technology and a spacious foyer with gastronomy, the WBT is a theatre with modern standards.
Claus Wernert founded the Wolfgang Borchert Theatre in 1956 as a "theatre in a small room" with 40 seats. Two years later it was continued as a "room theatre" in the railway station with already about 100 seats. Intended as an answer to outdated structures at city and state theatres, outdated content and dusty aesthetics, it quickly developed into an avant-garde stage. To this day, the theatre is dedicated to modern theatrical forms and plays with socially critical content.
The theatre received its current name for its 25th anniversary in the 1982/83 season. At the height of the peace movement, it was renamed after the writer Wolfgang Borchert - one of the best-known authors of Trümmerliteratur.
All prices and information on vouchers and private theatre evenings can be found on the theatre's website.
Join the University of Münster on the MS Wissenschaft, which is touring Germany as part of the "Science Year 2024 - Freedom". The floating science centre will dock in Münster's city harbour, near the Kunsthalle, from 18 to 22 July 2024.
In addition to the exhibition for experiencing, participating and coming together in the belly of the converted cargo ship, scientists from the University of Münster will be offering "Meet the Scientist" and "Dialogues on Deck" from 18 to 21 July. Our internal partners are the Käte Hamburger Centre for Advanced Study in Law (EViR), which is also part of the exhibition with an exhibit, the Philosophical Seminar, the Centre for Islamic Theology (ZIT), Catholic Theology, Protestant Theology and the Centre for Interdisciplinary Sustainability Research (ZIN). An external partner is the City of Münster with the Münster City Archive.
In addition, other researchers at the university have explored the concept of freedom in their respective fields. After all, what do they actually understand by the term freedom and how do they research its many aspects and forms?
The results can be seen in a small poster exhibition: Also on deck are the contents on posters by Dr Anna-Maria Balbach (Department of German Studies), Andrew Lepke (Department of Ancient History), Dr Markus Seidel and Julia Göhner (Centre for Philosophy of Science), Nate Wessalowski (Department of Communication Studies), Dr Roman Turczynski (Department of Political Science), and Prof Michael Custodis (Department of Musicology).
The AFO will also be presenting the current issue of its academic comic project "Ask Sophie!", which provides richly illustrated answers to questions submitted by young and old about freedom.
Admission is free. Registration is not required.
