Loburg Castle Park

Loburg Castle Park

The extensive landscaped park to the south of Schloss Loburg is designed in the style of an English garden. In the summer months, rhododendron bushes transform the park in Ostbevern into a vibrant sea of flowers. Many of the plantings are more than 100 years old, so you can take a stroll in a historic setting. You can also enjoy a wonderful picnic and take a stroll through the neighbouring baroque forest.

An old aristocratic residence with history

In its current form, the park dates back to plans by Maximilian Friedrich Weyhe. Built in 1294, the moated castle has undergone several extensions and conversions over the centuries, including in 1760 by Johann Conrad Schlaun, who transformed it into a baroque pleasure palace. After a fire in 1899, it was rebuilt in the neo-baroque style at the beginning of the 20th century and the park was redesigned in the style of an English garden.

A passionate botanist

Of the 60-hectare landscaped park, four hectares in the immediate vicinity of the castle are particularly well-tended. The former lord of the castle Karl Max Freiherr von Elverfeldt, known as Beverförde zu Werries, contributed significantly to the design of the castle park with his strong passion for exotic botany.

In addition to a large number of Dutch rhododendrons, including some rare specimens that transform the park into a true wonder of flowers in white, pink, yellow and purple in the summer months, he had North American Douglas firs planted in the neighbouring baroque park, making him one of the first to cultivate this tree species in Westphalia. An approximately 300 metre long baroque path and visual axis lined with rhododendrons leads to a pond at the end of the palace park and continues into the forest with a magnificent avenue of Douglas firs.

In 1930, a four-row oak avenue was also laid out on the access road to the castle. And close to the car park is a very old and culturally and historically significant Marienlinde, which is an important meeting point on the pilgrimage from Osnabrück to Telgte.

Insider tip | Loburg Way of the Cross

Loburg Castle is still owned by the Beverförde zu Werries family today. The episcopal boarding school has been based here since 1951. At the beginning of the 1950s, a Way of the Cross with 14 stations was built in the forest by the St Michael group of the New Germany Federation. Former school leavers were responsible for the design of the individual stations, which are made as bas-reliefs in cement on low brick blocks. The Loburg Way of the Cross was restored in 2018 and is considered a link between 'old Loburg times' and today's commitment to Christian values.
