When on a hiking or cycling tour in western Münsterland, it is worth paying a visit to this rather small nature reserve: the Kranenmeer (or Kranenmoor) near Heiden. This heather pond is located in one of the few heather moors still preserved in this region.
This is not only the name of the moorland, but also of the lake that gives it its name. It is 140 hectares in size, with the lake making up more than half of it.
You can take a leisurely stroll along the gravel paths in this little natural paradise and enjoy the flora and fauna. Birch, alder and pine trees can be found here, as well as marsh violets and frogweed. The water also provides a habitat for endangered species such as the moor frog and crested newt. So always show consideration for nature on your excursion here.
A fun fact on a side note: the name Kranenmeer goes back to a former crane yard that existed in the immediate neighbourhood.
