Ichterloh picnic area

This beautiful picnic area is surrounded by wild garlic forests and right next to the"old oak tree of Ichterloh". Perhaps a nightingale will greet you with its song at the entrance to the 230-hectare woodland area. The Ichterloh nature reserve is located in the municipalities of Ascheberg and Nordkirchen in the district of Coesfeld.

Once you arrive at the picnic area, a vantage point with a sweeping view over the Münsterland landscape awaits you. Ichterloh Castle once stood at the foot of the hollow, but disappeared after 500 years of history. On site, you can enjoy a relaxing bike ride through the forest or hike across vast fields and meadows.

Insider tip

The Ichterloh nature reserve offers many activities for nature lovers and families. Among other things, the Kaisermantelrundweg (4.2 kilometres) is signposted via the Schlösserachse project.

There is also an exciting"Geophyte and Herb Trail". Here, the numerous plant species as well as various orchids are presented. The oak-hornbeam and woodruff-beech forests of the Ichterloh are considered particularly rich in species. The occurrence of a total of five different woodpecker species is also remarkable and can be observed here. The circular trail is equipped with acoustic stations that you can call up and listen to on the website using your smartphone.

A visit is particularly worthwhile in spring, at the end of April/beginning of May, when the large stands of wild garlic covering the entire forest floor are in bloom.
