A family cycle path in the Münsterland
SteverLandRoute

SteverLandRoute

Impressions of the typical Münsterland landscape await you on the family cycle path: from the headwaters at the foot of the Baumberge mountains, past water mills and beautiful old farmsteads with Baumberg sandstone, to moated castles and nature reserves as well as picturesque towns. Sometimes you cycle directly along the Stever, then again the cycle path and river separate.

Children can explore the route with their own cycling map, "collect" coins and solve riddles, while adults can find out in detail about the history(s) of the little river in the accompanying book or on the information boards. At the hands-on stations you can discover, try out or picnic together. Low-barrier rest areas invite you to picnic and observe nature. Fun for young and old!

You can cycle the entire 72 km route from the source region in Nottlun to the mouth of the river Lippe at Haltern am See. Or take advantage of the other entry points along the route. On this page you will find four family-friendly, easy to moderately difficult stages with circular routes and detours. There are also several railway stations and numerous cafés and restaurants along the route.

Things to know for young and old

At particularly interesting or beautiful points you will find stations with information boards and hands-on elements. They contain information about the Stever and its natural and cultural history. The illustrated children's boards, on the other hand, give tips on how to solve riddles on a special discovery map for children. In addition, interactive elements invite visitors to experiment and discover together. There is also something for collectors: At each station there are metal Stever coins with changing motifs. They work like the familiar stamp maps of hiking trails. With a pencil hatching, they can be transferred to the discovery map for children. You can find all the stations in detail here.

The most beautiful experiences on the way

1
Senden Castle in Senden
© Münsterland e.V./Philipp Fölting

The non-profit association Schloss Senden e.V. took over the entire castle complex in 2015 to transform it into a cultural and educational venue. And it is succeeding! The castle is blossoming from a "lost place" into a popular destination for excursions. The castle park is accessible free of charge at all times. You can also take a break with coffee and cold drinks on site. The inside of the castle, on the other hand, can only be visited as part of a guided tour or an event.

The castle is currently undergoing renovation and will soon attract a wide audience with gastronomy, guided tours and events. At the moment, you can only see the castle from the outside. However, the picnic area on the Stever with a view of the castle is very suitable for a first break.

Vischering Castle is justifiably one of the most beautiful photo motifs in Münsterland. Among the numerous castles and palaces in the region, it is one of the oldest and best preserved. Despite being almost completely rebuilt in the 16th century, the castle has largely retained its fortified character. A great sight!

Steverauen in Olfen

The picturesque Stever floodplain is a special nature experience along the cycle path. Wild cattle, horses and donkeys populate the banks of the small river, which has developed into a true natural paradise in its floodplains. The perfect place for a cosy picnic with a view of nature.

Protect what is important to us

Some natural areas along the SteverLandRoute are under special protection. Please stay on existing paths during your visit and be considerate of the fauna and flora. At many places, information boards provide insight into the natural areas. Leave nothing but footprints and take only photos and unforgettable impressions with you.

Good arrival

Preserve the good together! Use the train for your journey and protect the climate and the environment. In Münsterland, this often works much better than you think.

  • If you are coming from Dortmund, Lüdinghausen is a particularly good starting point for your cycle tour.
  • From Münster, there are various bus routes from the main railway station to the centre of Nottuln. The train to Nottuln-Appelhülsen takes only twelve minutes.
